The annual Torquay weekend at the Palace Hotel combines competitive tennis (The Harley Watkins Cup for doubles) with golf (The Dennis Platford Cup).
The event takes place in March and is extremely popular amongst members. Those wishing to attend should contact John Harrop.
The 2009 event took place at the Palace Hotel in March (and it is rumoured that the proposed building development has been put on ice - so we may still be there for 2010!). Match Manager John Harrop reports an excellent weekend, with the Harley Watkins trophy being won by Chris Hill and Paul Thompson, after highly competitive matches against Sandy Mathews and Rob Short, and Robin Smith and Tony Biggs. The handicapping system obviously worked well as there were several very close matches. Many friends, partners and supporters attended and 24 people sat down for dinner on Thursday. The Harley Watkins trophy was presented by Vetstennis GB President Austin Smith, and Ann Platford presented the Dennis Platford golf trophy (or rather, she would have done if last year's winner, David Straker had remembered to bring it!). It is reported that Robin Smith played a "flawless" round of 27 in order to win the trophy, whilst Betty Norman shot an excellent 32 on the par 3 nine hole Palace course.
