Milford Tennis and Squash Club’s Open Seniors Tennis Tournament, played on artificial grass, is held annually towards the end of April. With no opportunity in 2020 due to Covid, the club’s pragmatic but forward-thinking tournament committee was determined to put on the 2021 event, which eventually ran from 7-11th June. Usually a doubles - men, ladies, mixed - event, this year singles was included for the first time.
In a Covid-safe environment and with favourable weather the tournament once again proved to be a great success due to the combined efforts of sponsors, competitors, club members, helpers and of course caterers.
There was success for SLTC members:
- Pauline Fisher won the WS45+ event,
- Godfrey Evans and Boyd Brackstone won the MD60+ event,
- Rennie Johnston, with partner Alan Gordon, won the MD70+ event,
- Rennie Johnston, with partner Jill Vaughan, won the XD70+ event.
Traditionally, this tournament is supported by local players based along the south coast and in adjacent counties but it is an open event. It’s worth making a note in your diary for next year when the club hopes to return to the traditional scheduled time of April 25-29th.
