Fine win over Fitzwilliam Club

The Club sent a strong men's team of 45+ and 55+ players over to Dublin to play against our friends from The Fitzwilliam Club. The tennis was competitive and hospitality wonderful, as usual.

Having lost on the two previous occasions it was satisfying to once again win the Ivar Boden trophy, on it's 25th anniversary.

Club members feature in World Team success

Super Seniors World team Championships - Antalya, Turkey

Congratulations to the GB W60 Team's great success in the Alice Marble Cup.

GB Ladies 60 World 2014Captained by Pauline Fisher and supported by Frances Candy, Sally Freeman and Ann Brown, the team went undefeated throughout the event. Wins over Poland, Argentina and Germany at the Group stage saw them into the semi-final where they beat The Netherlands before triumphing over the No 1 seeded team USA in the final.

The final came down to a deciding doubles rubber, as the teams shared their opening singles matches. Sally and Pauline took the first set but the Americans hit back to take the match into a decider, which GB went on to win 6-4. The victory ended a 4-year winning run for the USA and gave the GB team the title for the first time since 2004 and well deserved gold medals. There were three other GB Teams that won medals.

The Women's 65 team of Marjory Love, Shirley Fox, Rosemary Wilson and June Peck having won their three group matches in the Kitty Godfree Cup, lost to the USA (eventual winners) in the semi-final but won the play-off against Australia.

The Women's 70  team (Frances MacLennan, Jenny Waggott, Jacky Boothman and Felicity Thomas) also made a clean sweep of their group matches before having to give best to Germany (eventual winners) in the semi-final of the Althea Gibson Cup, but making sure of the bronze medal by beating the USA in the play-off for third.

In the Bitsy Grant Cup, the Men's 75 team of Clive Hutchings, Roy Henderson, Don Shears and Tony McBride, made sure of their bronze medal by heading their initial group to reach the semi-final where they lost to Australia (eventual winners), but beat Italy in the third place match.
