Condolences - Bernard Neal

We would like to acknowledge with great sadness the death of Bernard Neal, in his 94th year and a member of our Club since 1968.

Bernard was a highly competitive tennis player and venerable figure in the world of croquet. He played men's and mixed doubles at Wimbledon between 1946 and 1956, thereafter turning to croquet, which he first took up while studying at Cambridge. He has a unique claim to sporting fame as the winner of the greatest number of Wimbledon titles - 37 times the winner of the Wimbledon Croquet Championships and surpassing the haul of titles by any tennis player. He also served on the main committee of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club for many years.

Professor Bernard Neal was head of the Department of Civil Engineering at Imperial College London 1976-82. This professional background enabled him to contribute in the design of the retractable roof over Centre Court, an element that helps to stop the wind driving airborne water between the two halves when they converge.

A diplomatic and modest man and recognised expert in the world of croquet, both on and off the court. Our thoughts and condolences go to the Neal family and friends.

Narrow defeat to RICS

Our 2016 fixture against the RICS team ended in a close defeat by 7 sets to 5.

The match was played in 'bubbles' on artificial grass where the balls zipped around a little. However, what a great facility to have on a cold and windy day!

Despite a solid performance by Francis Caldwell and Phil Tovey at 1st pair, overall the RICS just edged it.

First match of the season - we can only get better.

AGM and Annual Dinner

The 57th Annual General Meeting of the Seniors' Lawn Tennis Club of Great Britain will be held on Monday 7th March at The Roehampton Club commencing 6:30pm.

The Chairman and New Members' Dinner will follow the AGM at the same venue - pre-dinner drinks 7:30 for an 8pm start. The cost this year will be for members and first guest £35 per head, with additional guests at £40 per head. We would request that you apply as soon as possible to assist in event planning - for an application form CLICK HERE.

HotowkaWe are delighted to announce that our special guest this year will be professional entertainer John Hotowka. John will perform close up magic in parallel with pre-dinner drinks, also during the meal between courses and finish with a 30-minute after dinner comedy and magic cabaret. This is quite a departure from our usual after dinner speaker but we are sure it will add a great deal of appeal to one of our key social occasions. For more information on John's delivery style and content - CLICK HERE.

Papers relevant to this year's AGM are available by accessing the Annual Events/AGM menu option.

Win for Dutch Seniors

The 10th annual men's fixture with the Dutch Seniors' Team, played in Almere near Amsterdam 11th - 13th Dec, ended in a defeat for the Seniors' Club of GB by a score of 8 - 14.

The match is traditionally played at singles and doubles with the Dutch taking full advantage this year of their home venue and running out strong winners.

The commemorative trophy for this fixture has been renamed the Peter Scholtz Cup, in memory of Peter who sadly died in 2015. He was a prominent member of the Dutch Team over the years and this gesture will preserve our memories of Peter for a long time to come.

A Happy New Year to all our Dutch friends and we look forward to the return fixture at the Edgbaston Priory LTC in December 2016.

Condolences - Jimmy Hill OBE

We would like to acknowledge with great sadness the death of James William Thomas "Jimmy" Hill OBE, who died peacefully on Saturday 19th December aged 87.

He was a fromer Honorary Member of our Club.

Jimmy Hill was primarily a football man and made a huge contribution to broadcasting through his authority and analysis. However, he still found time to indulge in his other sporting passions of tennis and golf, the former he used to play several times a week.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to the Hill family and friends for their loss.
