Tennis fixture in the USA 2017

Dear Member

We are looking to extend our 2017 fixture list by offering a match in the USA, more specifically Vero Beach Florida, timed for April to avoid their school holiday period. Vero Beach is approximately 100 miles South East of Orlando and 170 miles East of Sarasota.

The tennis event can be sized to accommodate both men and women, the standard will be very competitive and matched to our playing strength in age groups 35+ and upwards (no upper limit has been set). Members who are interested may want to plan an extended trip around the tennis - sightseeing, a Disney family experience or perhaps a Seniors Tounament run by the USTA.

At this stage we are just guaging interest as the event will involve a lot of planning and commitment but I am sure you agree it will be a real coup for our Club. It is likely there will be a reciprocal arrangement in future years.

If you are interested in this exciting opportunity then please email our Hon. Match Secretary Andrew Soul who will be able to send you more information when it becomes available. Andrew's contact details can be found on our Member List.

Condolences - Bill Maclagan

We would like to acknowledge with great sadness the death of Bill Maclagan on the 5th April, aged 70 and a member of our Club since 1995.

M W D Maclagan was a competitive and stylish tennis player, representing Somerset and Northants at County Week in the 1960's and 1970's. He became a full member of The All England Club in 1981.

Our thoughts at this time go out to Bill's family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30am on Wednesday 4th May at St. Mary's Church, Wimbledon SW19 7BP and afterwards at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Our President Mike Carroll will represent the Club and will be delighted to see anyone else able to attend.

Condolences - Bernard Neal

We would like to acknowledge with great sadness the death of Bernard Neal, in his 94th year and a member of our Club since 1968.

Bernard was a highly competitive tennis player and venerable figure in the world of croquet. He played men's and mixed doubles at Wimbledon between 1946 and 1956, thereafter turning to croquet, which he first took up while studying at Cambridge. He has a unique claim to sporting fame as the winner of the greatest number of Wimbledon titles - 37 times the winner of the Wimbledon Croquet Championships and surpassing the haul of titles by any tennis player. He also served on the main committee of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club for many years.

Professor Bernard Neal was head of the Department of Civil Engineering at Imperial College London 1976-82. This professional background enabled him to contribute in the design of the retractable roof over Centre Court, an element that helps to stop the wind driving airborne water between the two halves when they converge.

A diplomatic and modest man and recognised expert in the world of croquet, both on and off the court. Our thoughts and condolences go to the Neal family and friends.

Narrow defeat to RICS

Our 2016 fixture against the RICS team ended in a close defeat by 7 sets to 5.

The match was played in 'bubbles' on artificial grass where the balls zipped around a little. However, what a great facility to have on a cold and windy day!

Despite a solid performance by Francis Caldwell and Phil Tovey at 1st pair, overall the RICS just edged it.

First match of the season - we can only get better.

AGM and Annual Dinner

The 57th Annual General Meeting of the Seniors' Lawn Tennis Club of Great Britain will be held on Monday 7th March at The Roehampton Club commencing 6:30pm.

The Chairman and New Members' Dinner will follow the AGM at the same venue - pre-dinner drinks 7:30 for an 8pm start. The cost this year will be for members and first guest £35 per head, with additional guests at £40 per head. We would request that you apply as soon as possible to assist in event planning - for an application form CLICK HERE.

HotowkaWe are delighted to announce that our special guest this year will be professional entertainer John Hotowka. John will perform close up magic in parallel with pre-dinner drinks, also during the meal between courses and finish with a 30-minute after dinner comedy and magic cabaret. This is quite a departure from our usual after dinner speaker but we are sure it will add a great deal of appeal to one of our key social occasions. For more information on John's delivery style and content - CLICK HERE.

Papers relevant to this year's AGM are available by accessing the Annual Events/AGM menu option.
