Narrow autumn defeat to a strong Dutch Team

A strong Dutch representative team narrowly won this enthralling and high quality encounter played at the All England Community Centre, Raynes Park over two days 21/22 Oct. The 11 1/2 - 12 1/2 scoreline in favour of the Dutch means a defeat for our Club on the scoreboard but once again there was some great tennis on display, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who took part. Also, a lot of fun was had off-court and everyone bonded socially during the excellent team meal and tennis quiz. A tour around Westminster Abbey was included.
Thank you to all players involved and especially the Dutch Team who were well organised and managed.
We look forward to next year's match back across the Channel.

Success for Club members at the World Individual Championships for 75+ ages

Many congratulations to Chris Ornstien and Richard Tutt who are MD80+ World Champions. Chris and Richard won gold after a nail-biting 11-9 tie-break decider in a high quality final against the experienced and fancied USA pair of Michael Beautyman and Jimmy Parker.
Chris also just lost out to Jimmy Parker in a tie-break deciding set in his MS80+ semi-final.
Special mention also for Boyd Brackstone who lost his MS75+ semi-final to Bruno Renoult (FRA) in three sets. Renoult (a formerWorld Champion) was top seed and the eventual event winner.
Phyllis Bentham reached the semi final of the WD80+ event and was also losing finalist in the XD80+ event.
Niall Sweeney, with playing partner Ann Stanley, lost a tight match in their XD75+ semi final to the eventual Australian winners.

World Masters Team Events for age groups 75, 80 & 85+ held in Crete

Congratulations to all the GB Teams that played at the World Masters Team event in Crete and especially our Women's 75+ and Men's 80+ teams that secured silver medals. Final standings M75 (6th), W75 (2nd), M80 (2nd), W80 (5th), M85 (8th) and W85 (4th).

Successful 2-day match at The Devonshire, Plymouth

Our highly anticipated fixture against a Devon County select team, played over 2 days at The Devonshire in Plymouth Oct 15/16, was a great success both on and off the court. Condolences - Austin Smith

We have received the sad news that Honorary club member Austin Smith has died, aged 96.
Austin was first elected as Lawn Tennis Association Councillor in 1981, on behalf of Kent Tennis, a role he undertook for 15 years before being elected a Life Vice-President of the LTA. Whilst an LTA Councillor, Austin was made Chair of the Eastbourne International Tournament Committee, which lasted for 13 years from 1985 to 1997 (inclusive).
He gave many years of outstanding and dedicated service to Kent Tennis becoming their Life President in 2016. He was an extremely hard working administrator and his prowess in this area enabled him to hold positions on many influential committees. An excellent player himself, he was also a familiar face to many players on the Seniors Tennis circuit.
Austin undertook his many roles with his wife Cynthia by his side; Cynthia herself was a GB Seniors player and Kent Seniors Coordinator, as well as many years on Kent’s committees too. Our condolences at this sad time go out to Cynthia and the children, their close family and friends.

Mixed team draw at Winchester

Our annual mixed fixture against Winchester always delivers quality tennis and this year was no exception. The 3-3 draw included 4 out of 6 rubbers being decided by a match tie-break. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day and thanks to The Winchester Club for hosting us and providing excellent hospitality.

Mixed team win at The West Hants Club

Our mixed team travelled from far and wide to combine and deliver a fine win by 8 sets to 4. First pair of Julie Fox and Paul England remained unbeaten on the day and our second and third pairs contributed with two sets each. A well-deserved victory on the clay was rounded off with a very welcome post-match tea. Thank you to the West Hants players for providing testing opposition and of course the Club itself for its hospitality.

Men's team lose at Purley

Purley won the match 6 sets to 2. Our first pair of Richard Wayman and Chris Gotla halved both their games and remained unbeaten on the day but our second pair struggled against keen and astute opposition. The first time this fixture has been played and we look forward to it being a regular one in our match calendar.

British Masters Open Grass Court - Eastbourne

The scorching summer had raised hopes that this year's tournament during the last week of August would be completed with blue skies overhead and firm grass underfoot. However, there is nothing predictable about the British weather and once again the event was badly affected. After a promising start conditions deteriorated. The later stages of the majority of the doubles events were abandoned and the organisers focused on completion of the singles events. Many were played on a 'first to four' each set basis and the majority completed. Having come away with a fine 4-0 win last year hopes were high this time around. However, a strong and competitive PSOB team did just enough to secure a 3-1 victory.
