Condolences - Angela Mortimer Barrett MBE
Posted:
1 September 2025
It was with great sadness that we learnt of the death of Angela Mortimer Barrett on 25th August 2025, aged 93 and an Honorary Member of our Club since April 2009.
Angela was a very determined and resolute tennis player. She won Wimbledon in 1961 and was also victorious at the Australian and French Championships in the 1950’s. In addition to her three major singles titles, she was also a doubles champion at Wimbledon.
In 1967 she married John Barrett, a fellow British tennis player who became a distinguished tennis writer and broadcaster. In the same year, she was awarded the MBE for services to tennis. Angela was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1993.
There are many accolades to be found regarding Angela’s tennis career and we urge our members, some of whom knew her personally, to read about the life and achievements of one of the greatest tennis players this country has ever produced.
Our condolences go out to Angela's husband, John; their children, Michael and Sarah Jane; grandchildren, family and friends, especially those at the All England Club.

Men win at Roehampton
Posted:
10 August 2025
A strong team represented us at Roehampton and we enjoyed a fine win on grass in a hard-fought match. Played in hot conditions and against a generally younger team our 'guile and fitness' levels saw us through some tricky moments and we emerged 6-3 winners. Our top pair of Nigel Watts and Ian Thomas remained undefeated on the day. Excellent post-match hospitality was provided by the Roehampton Club.
